JEDDAH, 1 June 2008 — Members of the Jeddah deaf bowling team emerged victorious in Riyadh in the Bowling Championships for Deaf at the Universal Bowling Center owned by Prince Abdulhakim ibn Musaed. Twenty-one bowlers participated. Abdullah Al-Muqerein, a veteran businessman, awarded the winners on behalf of Prince Sultan ibn Fahd, president of the General Presidency of Youth Welfare. Prince Abdulhakim made the event free of charge for the bowlers to compete in the two-day tournament that ended on Friday. Mohammed Oraif placed first, while second place went to Fahad Al-Rumaih, and third to Abdullah Al-Malki in the singles event. Bowlers from Tabuk, Abha, Taif, Jeddah, Riyadh, and Dammam bowled 12 rounds on Thursday and six on Friday but only Jeddah bowlers made it to the final and Oraif beat Al-Rumaih to clinch first place.
Mudar Champs of Nokhbah Handball
JEDDAH, 1 June 2008 — After playing four matches since Sunday, Mudar, which won three matches, emerged champions of Al-Nokhbah Handball Championship after beating Al-Khaleej 33-26 in the clincher to collect seven points. Ahli came second with six points after beating Al-Nour 36-31, and Al-Khaleej placed third with four points. Fourth place went to Al-Wehda, which had three points while Al-Nour came fifth with no points in the event which attracted the top five teams from the Saudi league. After beating Al-Wehda 26-20 in their opener, Mudar, as per expectations, tied with Saudi League champions Al-Ahli 28-28, and then outplayed Al-Nour 31-29, and finally crushed Al-Khaleej 33-26 (17-14).
Ittihad Paddlers Win Al-Nokhbah Title
JEDDAH, 1 June 2008 — The local table tennis season ended with Al-Ittihad adding their third title by winning the Al-Nokhbah Table Tennis Championship on Thursday. Winners of the Saudi League and Saudi Federation Cup League, Ittihad won their third title after beating Al-Ahli 3-2, thanks to Naif Al-Judai’s crushing of Mansour Alim of Ahli 3-0 in the last matchup. Though Abdulaziz Al-Abbad managed to outplay Khalid Al-Harbi in the previous leagues, it was Al-Harbi’s time to win, yet Al-Abbad received best player award. According to sources, Ittihad teams (men, youth, juveniles) refused to play because they did not receive their previous awards, not to mention the pending request of the youth and juvenile teams of sacking their Egyptian coach Yahya Zakariya, who they claim disrespected them. Veteran athlete Bandar Al-Omairi of Ittihad, meanwhile, managed to convince the athletes to play and the event ran smoothly.
