MADRID, Spain: A nine-man Real Madrid rallied to beat Valencia 4-2 and lift the Spanish Supercup 6-5 on aggregate on Sunday.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, Sergio Ramos, Ruben De La Red and Gonzalo Higuain scored for Madrid, which had midfielder Rafael van der Vaart ejected in the 39th minute and striker Ruud van Nistelrooy in the 73rd. Valencia’s David Silva opened the scoring, with Fernando Morientes completing a late goal rush at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

It was the eighth time Madrid won the trophy — contested annually by the league champion and Copa del Rey winner — and the first since 2003. The result represented a disappointing start to the new season for Valencia’s recently appointed coach Unai Emery.

Playing its first game in the capital since winning the Copa del Rey final in April, Valencia’s 3-2 first-leg advantage was barely threatened by a lackluster Madrid in the first half. The visitors increased their overall lead in the 33rd minute when Silva culminated a slick passing move with a low shot from just outside the area which left Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas rooted to the spot.

Madrid’s problems quickly worsened when van der Vaart was sent off for a studs-high tackle on Valencia midfielder Juanma Mata. Van der Vaart was making his home debut for Madrid, which he joined from Hamburg this month.

Madrid and referee Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez were whistled and jeered by home supporters as they left the field at halftime.

However, Madrid received the chance to equalize when Valencia defender Raul Albiol handled van Nistelrooy’s goalbound header. The Dutch striker’s successful spot-kick brought his tally from both legs to three goals.

Inter Milan claims

Italian Supercup

In Miland, Serie A champion Inter Milan defeated Italian Cup holder AS Roma on penalty kicks to win its fourth Italian Super Cup on Sunday.

After playing to 2-2 through extra time, Inter topped Roma 6-5 on penalties. Roma captain Francesco Totti, in his first game back after a knee injury in April, missed his penalty that would have given his side victory.

Roma came from behind twice in regulation in front of 43,000 spectators at Milan’s San Siro stadium. The teams failed to score in extra time. “I have a difficult history with penalty shootouts,” said Jose Mourinho after his first match in charge of Inter.

“I lost a semifinal of Champions League on penalty kicks, but today it was my day with the penalties.” Inter regained the cup which was launched in 1998 and pits the winner of the Serie A against the winner of the Italian Cup.

Roma defeated Inter last year for its second Super Cup.

Inter and Roma battled for the Serie A title until the final game of last season and met in the Italian Cup final. The teams are among the favorites for the new Serie A, which begins on Saturday.

Sulley Muntari, one of Inter’s two off-season signings, put the dominating Nerazzurri ahead in the 18th minute when he knocked in an errant kick by a Roma defender that had bounced off the post.

In a more even second half, Daniele De Rossi beat Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar with a hard shot to the upper corner of the goal in the 59th to draw Roma even the first time.

“We were super in the first half and they reacted in the second half, that’s normal,” Mourinho said.

Mario Balotelli scored in the 83rd with an easy shot when he found himself one-on-one with Roma goalkeeper Alexander Doni after an offsides trap failed.

Totti entered in the 83rd and Mirko Vucinic drew Roma even a second time heading in a corner in the 90th.

“Vucinic’s goal never should have gone in, we should have won 2-1 in regulation and everybody could have gone home a lot earlier,” said Mourinho, who spent most of the game seated in the clubhouse.

His counterpart at Roma, Luciano Spalletti, paced up and down in front of his clubhouse for most of the game.
