JEDDAH: Just what exactly is the role of honorary members at sport clubs? This issue is to be taken up when honorary members of the Jeddah-based club Al-Ittihad meet today in the house of Hussein Linjawi, an honorary member of the club.
The meeting, Arab News sources say, is expected to bring back the high-profile role these members play in the running of the affairs of the club more so because Prince Khaled ibn Fahd reconsidered his resignation as honorary member after he got what he had asked for to run the club — financial support.
Prince Khaled is expected to preside the meeting and that many of the old members who had been away from the club will attend.
Meantime, Ittihad’s Egyptian professional player, Emad Miteb, has taken advantage of the respite after the second round and left for Egypt on condition he arrives in time for resumption of training today. Moroccan player Hisham Busharwan was unable to leave because of problems booking a flight home.
Also, the national teams of Morocco and Egypt had put the Argentinean coach Gabriel Calderon in a difficult situation after both teams chose their professional players at Ittihad to join their national teams in World Cup African Qualifiers 2010 on Oct. 11. This means that the two players will miss the important match against Shabab at that time. The club administration will give players Eid vacation for one day but they are required to return on the second day of Eid in preparation for the match against Al-Hazem on Oct. 4 in the Saudi Professional League in Jeddah.
