MEXICO CITY: Mexico’s Cruz Azul crushed Costa Rica’s Saprissa 4-0 on Tuesday, moving to the top of Group A in the CONCACAF Champions League.
In other results Tuesday, Panama’s San Francisco were held to a goalless draw at home against Houston of the United States, and Puerto Rico Islanders made it two wins from two games by beating Mexico’s Santos Laguna 3-1.
Cruz Azul went ahead in the 24th minute through striker Miguel Sabah. Captain Gerardo Torrado scored the best goal of the night in the 54th, while Paraguayans Pablo Zeballos and Christian Riveros scored in the 61st and 67th for the Blue Machine.
The result put Cruz Azul top on goal difference from Saprissa and Marathon of Honduras, which has a game in hand. D.C. United of the US visits Marathon next day. The top two teams will progress to the quarterfinals.
San Francisco has two draws from as many games in Group B, while Houston — whose first game was postponed due to Hurricane Ike — and Mexico’s Pumas have one point each from one game. Pumas will host El Salvador’s Firpo next day.
Puerto Rico Islanders have snatched an early lead in Group D with six points from two games. Santos has a win and a draw, while Guatemala’s Municipal and Panama’s Tauro have a point each from one game ahead of their clash next day.
