RIYADH: Al Ammas Cricket Club defeated Trico Cricket Club in a nail biting finish to win the first Arab Lanka Independence Trophy T10 Cricket Tournament held Friday at the WPCA grounds in Jeddah.

Trico batted first to score 92 runs for 6 wickets in 10 overs. Al Ammas gained victory by scoring the 93rd run in the penultimate ball during the last over by defeating the opponents by three wickets.

The event was organized by Arab Lanka Restaurant in coordination with the Sri Lankan Consulate to commemorate the 62nd Independence Day of Sri Lanka. Sabarullah Khan, newly appointed consul general of Sri Lanka, graced the occasion as the chief guest and distributed the awards to the winning team.

Al Ammas received a cash prize of SR2, 000 and Trico SR1, 000.

The top 12 Sri Lankan teams based in Jeddah participated in this 10-over tournament. Congratulating the participants and the respective winners , the consul general expressed his admiration at the level of cricket played in Saudi Arabia and thanked Mohamed Basith of Arab Lanka Restaurant for sponsoring the event.

Faisal Shajahan, project chairman, said the main objective of organizing this event was to provide an opportunity for Jeddah-based Sri Lankan cricketers to get together and to display their skills on the grounds .

Fairoze Sadat, co-chairman of the project, said that the unprecedented response from the community has prompted the sponsors to make this an annual event with the participation of more teams in future.

Basith thanked all the teams , co-sponsors, organizing committee and others who contributed towards the success of this grand tournament. The event was attended by a large crowd who were entertained to an exciting cricket.
