- RIYADH: Seventy players braved the hot afternoon sun for the start of the two-day ABGR-American Express 17th Annual Golf Tournament on Wednesday at the Dirab Golf and Country Club.
A further 92 players will tee it up at 8:30 a.m. Thursday on the final day of the event where the participants are spread out in teams of four in a Texas Scramble format competition.
This is the second time ABGR (American Business Group-Riyadh) is holding its annual clambake at Dirab since one of the city’s biggest and oldest golf communities returned to the DGCC last year after a three-year break.
The course setup was excellent with the greens reading at 10.5 on the stepmeter. Course owner and president of Saudi Golf Federation, Khaled Abunayyan, was on the course the last two days to make sure everything was in order.
Tom Merkel and Bob Coffey are in charge of the event as co-chair of the ABGR Golf Committee, who both expressed their special thanks to the tournament’s big supporters namely Prince Ahmad bin Khalid of American Express, Priyan Attaygalle (CEO American Express, Jerry Don Carolis (Head-Service Support & Quality Am Ex), Sami El Natour (Group Head-Marketing & P.R. Am Ex), Fahad Al-Guthami(C.O.O. Am Ex) and Nizar Abou Hassan (Deputy Head of marketing & P.R. Am Ex).
