Luhrmann will start a creative workshop in December in Sydney, with the full production schedule and location of the premiere to be announced at a later date. "Strictly Ballroom," a romantic comedy revolving around an Australian dancer's struggle to get his personal dance style accepted, was Luhrmann's first movie. It was based on a short play he created and staged in 1986. The movie won three BAFTA awards and was nominated for a Golden Globe. "Strictly Ballroom" has always been very personal to me, the genesis drawn from my childhood experience in the world of ballroom dancing," Luhrmann said.

"The creative and life ideals of the story, that being that a life lived in fear is a life half lived; and creativity triumphing over creative oppression, the belief there's always more than just one way (to cha cha cha), are ideals I live and create by to this day."

Luhrmann followed up "Strictly Ballroom" with two other theatre-themed films, "Romeo + Juliet" and "Moulin Rouge!" His most recent production was the costly 2008 box office disappointment "Australia."
