- TOKYO: Hewlett-Packard Co will shift production of notebook computers for sale in Japan to its Tokyo factory from China, bucking the trend of manufacturers moving operations to Asia to take advantage of cheaper labor, the Nikkei business daily said.
HP reckons it will increase sales volume without compromising profitability by improving manufacturing efficiency and reducing delivery time to customers, the daily reported.
HP will expand its Akishima facilities in the eastern suburb of the capital, which currently make desktop computers, by boosting its workforce 50 percent to 450, the Nikkei said.
From August, the factory will assemble 80 percent of HP notebooks for sale to Japanese and the figure will be raised to 100 percent eventually, the daily said.
The company plans to raise the capacity utilization at Akishima by using the same production lines for both desktop and notebook computers, the daily reported.
