Four farmers were killed and 10 others were in injured on Monday when police opened fire on them in a town near Pune.

The opposition blamed Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Energy Minister Sunil Tatkare for the water problem in Vadgaon Mawal which led to the violent clashes and the police firing. The slogan shouting opposition boycotted the proceedings of the house and walked out.

Most political parties excluding the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) had called for a Maval total closure on Tuesday to protest against Dam Pipeline Project to lay a 35-km water pipeline from the Pavana dam in Maval to Pimpri Chinchwad Township in Pune.

What triggered the violence was the protest by the farmers against the closed water pipeline project which will supply water to Pimpri Chinchwad from Pavana Dam. The farmers feared that the project would deprive them of their land and affect supply of drinking and irrigation water.

Angry villagers blocked the Pune-Mumbai super Expressway at Beur on Tuesday leading to the traffic going haywire and vehicles queue up. The police intervened and requested the protestors to clear the expressway. But the angry mob ignored the police request and surrounded the police force throwing stones at them and setting a police vehicle on fire. When the situation went out of hand, the police opened fire.

As a precaution, the Pune Rural police have deployed over 1000 policemen in the area and 100 police personnel specifically on the expressway to avoid any untoward incident on Wednesday. The situation today was reported to be tense but under control.

The opposition demanded a judicial inquiry into the police firing and an immediate cash compensation of 500,000 rupees to the deceased farmers and 50,000 rupees each to the injured.
