Unfortunately, its use has stretched beyond necessity. Some converse casually for hours with the devices glued to their ears, exchanging niceties, jokes and gossip, oblivious of the potential “dangers” of radiation emissions directed to their poor brains. You can only feel the harmful and irritating effects of radiation when the device becomes unbearably hot against your ear. This kind of abuse has become common to many working and nonworking adults, adolescents and even very young children at home, work, in cars, trains, streets, during exercising and all the time. We see cellular phones stuck to ears or earphones and headsets attached to heads. This sight was barely seen a decade ago in the streets or elsewhere.

Cell phone use has become so prevalent that users have exceeded the billion mark. Not only do people carry one mobile in their pockets or bags, but a good number also move around with more than one device. Most of us carry our mobiles close to our bodies or have them stuck to our ears and heads, outdoors, indoors and in closed areas inside cars and train carriages. The moving vehicles switch from one wireless tower to another.

Wireless devices work harder and harder when switching antennas to keep the signal strong, making radiation emissions more powerful and more harmful. The user is unaware of the high radio frequency radiation that is bombarding his body and brain cells. Those who live close to wireless towers and antennas installed on top of houses and buildings are more at risk than others as they are surrounded by radiation. Take a peek out of your windows and you will understand better what I am describing. You can realize the intensity of mobile signals only when you place them near a land line set. The buzzing sounds emitted from both devices are indications of the amount of radiation that is spreading exponentially around you when a caller is attempting to connect.

Remember, you and I are not the only ones communicating through wireless devices; thousands and millions of others are also doing so at the same instant. Cellular phones, towers and antennas transmit radio signals back and forth in order for us to have a decent wireless conversation. Have you thought who could be the target of such radiation? Radio frequency signals are indiscriminate in their targeting. The waves hit whoever and whatever are in their path: Humans, animals, plants, or any living being. Solid objects do not seem to get affected. Plants know how to defend themselves from radiation. They have efficient systems that detoxify them as well as their surrounding environment from most pollutants including radiation. Who then gets the most impacted?  Living beings, their organs and systems are the most susceptible targets!

According to experts, being frequently in the way of radio wave radiation can disrupt the electrical field of the human body and brain cells or neurons. The brain suffers the most hits and damage. Due to such exposure, the electrical fields of human cells get negatively influenced, resulting in symptoms and diseases without showing immediate apparent harm. Such interference affects cell growth, resulting in DNA damage. Casual symptoms start appearing as disturbed sleep, anxiety, irritability and then depressive disorders. Confusion, inability to concentrate and memory decline are other mental disorders. Suppressed immunity lead to child and adult leukemia and cancers (eye, malignant brain tumors), which take years to surface. Physical dysfunctions like infertility begin to show.

Due to their smaller bodies, finer skulls and developing systems, children are at a much higher risk of getting impacted by radio waves especially in the uterus through mother’s overuse. The fetal brain manifests developmental issues, learning disabilities, behavioral disorders and even brain tumors.

A study, sometime ago, showed that cows in fields surrounded by high tension towers yielded less milk than their counterparts in environments without such towers.

During the cold war between the US and the USSR, now the Russian Republic, the Russians directed high frequencies of radio radiation toward the American Embassy in Moscow. As a result, two consecutive ambassadors developed leukemia while other staff members had “irreversible DNA damage.”

Unfortunately, most research on wireless radiofrequency radiation and safety issues is financed by the wireless industry, which can be inaccurate and lopsided.

Radiation and microwave detectors can be used for measuring the amount of “harmful radiation” at home and workplace. Dr. Ben Kim suggests “Silver mesh curtains and copper flat paint can block significant amounts of radio frequency radiation.”

Since we currently have no say in the installation of cell phone towers and radio antennas by wireless companies in urban areas, we need to educate ourselves about the matter in order to start voicing our opinions about their placements in our living surroundings. According to Dr. Kim, countries like Austria, Switzerland and Eastern Europe have come up with “protective standards for human exposure to radio frequency radiation.” Scotland is way ahead; towers are not permitted to be located close to hospitals, schools, and living spaces. In order to protect our brains and bodies from radiation damage, we should have a say in what is “injurious” to our brains and bodies.

I shall leave you to reflect on what I have written today and next week, inshallah, I shall suggest ways to minimize radiation exposure to your brain and body. Until then, try to reduce the use of your cellular device and the length of wireless conversations especially in confined spaces and in motor cars and trains.
