Casellanos, Nichol rule Riyadh Triathlete’s second triathlon

The Riyadh Triathlete’s second triathlon of the season was held Friday last week.
Due to the lack of a single facility in Riyadh that could host the required swimming, cycling and running, the event was split into two locations. The 20-kilometer cycling course, which began the day’s racing, was set up along traditional time-trial guidelines, with a straight ride out and back. Unfortunately for the riders the cycle started with a steep incline, which immediately split the group, providing a small advantage to the experienced cyclists who may not have suffered so much from burning in their legs.
The first triathlete off the bike and into transition was Dave Wright (M – Open) with a time of 00:32:36, closely followed by Antonio Castellanos (M – Open) in a time of 32:49 and Gerd Muetze (M – Open) with 33:48. Castellanos capitalized on a quick transition (01:09), one second ahead of Muetze, and completed the run, of just shy of four kilometers, in first place with a time of 15:01. Second and third places went to Damian Berthet (M – Open) and ZiadFostock (M – Open) with times of 15:04 and 15:36 respectively. As neither competitor completed all three events they were excluded from the overall scores allowing the full triathlon participants to compete for podium positions.
After the second transition, which included a car journey, Castellanos was able to substantiate his overall win with a third place swim, achieving a time of 10:24, just three seconds behind Alex Carinan (M – Open). Another outstanding performance by Phoebe Lloyd-Evans (F – Junior), gave her first place in the swim with a time of 08:36.
The friendly rivalry between Fiona Nichol (F – Veteran) and Freda Gocian (F – Veteran) continued although they again finished the first leg together with a time of 41:30. Jana Jaruskova took third place in Category B, with a time of 43:13. Nichol had a lead of 17 seconds between her and Gocian in the first transition, with a very quick time of 01:02. Nichol then increased her lead with a run time of 19:45, with Gocian finishing in a time of 21:29, just four seconds ahead of Jaruskova. Congratulations go to Liz Laughton who completed the Category B run with a winning time of 16:32. Nichol then completed the 600-meter swim in the Category B with a winning time of 12:17 and took winner’s maximum points overall. Gocian finished her swim in second place, with a time of 12:44, achieving an overall second place in Category B. Jaruskova took third place Category B in both the swimming (13:53) and overall.
