I congratulate the countries that have done very well in the latest World’s Corruption Perception rankings. Denmark, Finland and New Zealand have obtained the highest score of 90 and trying for the first place. Singapore, at 87, leads the Asian countries, and is placed third in the world rankings that has surveyed a total of 176 countries.
Some analysts have disputed the high ranking given to Switzerland (86), saying the country encourages corruption across the world by providing a safe haven to corrupt people for saving their ill-gotten money in the (in)famous Swiss banks while many die with hunger.
The SAARC nations meanwhile present a deplorable performance. Sri Lanka with a score of 40 is leading, but is placed 79th in the list, followed by India (36) placed 94th, Pakistan (27) placed 139th and Bangladesh (26) being placed 144th out of 176 countries.
I remember a Russian activist, who was fighting corruption in his country, making a remark: "Corruption is more dangerous than nuclear."
The root cause of corruption anywhere is politicians who put their own interests above those of the public, when officials demand money and favors from citizens for services that should be free. — S.H. Moulana, Riyadh
