A Filipino driver has praised the Saudi justice system for finally getting his abusive employer to give him a plane ticket to go home after a three-year legal battle.
The governor's office in Riyadh has ordered the Passport Office to clear Monico (not his real name).
He urged other Filipinos in his position to trust the Kingdom's judiciary.
“It pays to be patient,” he said. “They should not lose hope. They should be optimistic and pray for guidance and bear in mind that there's a justice system in the Kingdom.”
“At last I can go back to my family in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, after three long, long years.” Laguna province is located south of Manila.
He was grateful for the help of Arab News, saying, “Thank you for the assistance.”
Monico came to the Kingdom with a dream to earn good money for his family. But his dream turned sour when he had to face constant abuse from his employer in Naseem, in the eastern part of Riyadh. He then ran away and turned to the courts for help.
He had a difficult time. He went to the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) inside the Diplomatic Quarter in Riyadh, but unlike stranded female overseas foreign workers (OFWs), there is no shelter provided for males.
With an expired residency card (iqama), he had to look for a place to stay and sleep at night. He could not approach compatriots because harboring runaway OFWs is prohibited.
He found various jobs and had someone send the money to his family on his behalf because he had an expired iqama. A valid document is needed for bank transactions.
The POLO gave him a letter for the governor's office, which in turn sent him to the municipal court in Naseem. It also gave him a letter for the court.
“The court, in turn, gave me a letter I had to take to my former employer who continuously refused to see and talk to me,” he said.
After a year, Monico called Arab News to talk about his sad plight. He also requested that we accompany him to the POLO inside the DQ. He failed to make it for the meeting. He called later to say that his taxi had been held up in traffic. Arab News finally called the POLO to request assistance for him.
