HOUSTON: Former US President George H. W. Bush is being treated at Methodist Hospital in Houston, hospital spokeswoman Stephanie Asin said yesterday.
No other information was immediately available from the hospital. A spokesman for Bush could not immediately be reached for comment.
Bush, 88, has a chronic cough and that his condition is not life-threatening. He has been in the hospital for a week and is expected to be released this weekend, a newspaper reported.
Bush, a Republican and the 41st president, took office in 1989 and lost his re-election bid in 1992 to Democrat Bill Clinton. The father of former President George W. Bush, he served as a congressman, UN ambassador, envoy to China, CIA director and was two-term vice president under Ronald Reagan.
As president, Bush routed Iraq after Saddam Hussein had invaded Kuwait in 1990 and his approval ratings soaring to the 90 percent range. But just 20 months later he would be defeated in his re-election bid by Clinton.
