The trio of Aries Macaspac, Bautista and De Guzman led Grain Silos II past Al-Sorayai II 82-73 to draw first blood in the Strong Division best-of-three finals in the 2012 Perfetto Basketball Tournament organized by Industrial Sports Association and in cooperation with Industrial City Dawah Office (ICDO) court at Industrial City Phase I on the outskirts of Jeddah.
Also winning openers in their own title playoffs were SPS against B-Cola 65-58 in Bonafide Group B and Sleep High against Sadafco 76-64 in Bonafide Group A.
Grain Silos II got off to a fast start, a 10-2 run in the first few minutes of the game but Sorayai II was quick to recover, though, with Pacla, Arevalo and Oyco knotting it up at 10-all with back-back baskets each plus two free-throws of Salasiban to end the pulsating first quarter 18-all.
The first half ended 34-all. In the third period, coach Adbulaziz of GS II instructed his defensive specialists Serrano, Villamor and Razon to play intense defense. They succeeded and to lead by four points 56-52 to end the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Al-Sorayai II grabbed the lead 60-58 with less than 6 minutes to play but GS II countered as Bautista’s shooting and De Guzman’s unselfish plays resulted in 12 points while Macaspac dug deep in his arsenal to be named Best Player of the game with 27 points and ensure victory.
After the first half ended 27-21 to B-Cola SPS kept coming back and center Datuin continued to wax hot in the shaded area while Ramirez and Jacob hit mid-range jumpers and fast breaks pushing SPS within striking distance 39-38 after third quarter.
In the final quarter, Ramirez scored 8 points and Santos added 5 but still it was battle of the centers in payoff time when Tababa of B-Cola muscled his way in the paint for 9 points but Datuin answered to score two layups with a foul and completed the three point play that gave SPS a 56-53 lead with less than three minutes remaining.
Datuin finished with 27 points and named Best Player in Game 1 of the series.
Dellosa was Best Player of the game with 22 points leading Sleep High past Sadafco.
Sadafco drew 25 points from Banag but still couldn’t buy a win owing to the absence of its two great scorers Binas and Pajes and Poliquit scoring only 11 points.
First quarter was all Sleep High and the first quarter quarter ended 18-7. Banag and Poliquit combined for 15 points but Dello and Vista countered with 11 points to end the first half 35-27. Sadafco boosted its production in the third but that wasn’t enough to stop Sleep High especially Dellosa who scored 13 points in fourth quarter alone.
