Saudi Arabia and the Dominican Republic have recently established diplomatic relations, strengthening the ties between the two nations. "The establishment of diplomatic ties will pave the way for closer political and commercial relations as well as opening diplomatic missions in respective countries," a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced yesterday.
Saudi Arabia and the Dominican Republic endorsed a document formalizing diplomatic relations on Wednesday in a ceremony hosted by the Saudi delegation to the United Nations in New York. Dominican Foreign Minister Carlos Morales and Saudi Ambassador to the UN Abdallah Al-Mouallimi, signed the protocol in which both countries expressed willingness to strengthen relations and expand cooperation.
"The two countries pledged to support all efforts for peace and security on bilateral and international levels," it added. The Kingdom enjoys diplomatic relations with a large number of nations including several other Caribbean countries.
The establishment of diplomatic relations will help boost commercial ties between the Kingdom and Dominican Republic, which has the ninth largest economy in Latin America and the second largest economy in the Caribbean and Central American region. The Dominican Republic has also become the Caribbean's largest tourist destination.
The Dominican Republic is a Spanish-speaking nation and has a population of 69 percent Roman Catholics and 19 percent of Evangelical faith. The country is a representative democracy and the president governs the executive branch, executes laws passed by the congress, appoints Cabinet and is commander of the armed forces.
