This is with reference to the report “2m unmarried men, women; costly weddings key factor” (May 2). These figures should set alarm bells ringing in the society. The problem with us is that we usually wait for government intervention in every issue to get it resolved. Truth be told, we are the creators of this problem. Our materialistic approach toward life is the culprit that has made an important thing such as marriage an uphill task. We need to rethink our priorities. What is the use of spending thousands of riyals just to make a statement in the society and to unnecessarily impress others?
Wealthy people can afford to throw lavish parties but they, perhaps unintentionally, set high standards for others to follow. Unfortunately, our herd mentality forces us to follow such people. We should adopt simplicity in our lives and say no to artificial standards. That is the key to a happy life.
