This is with reference to the article “Illusion of water scarcity” (May 9) by Nadeem Mumtaz Qureshi. It was an interesting article and I fully agree with the writer that most of the problems our country Pakistan is facing are mainly due to mismanagement and unnecessary political interference in the smooth functioning of various departments. I am not very much aware of the technicalities involved in the distribution of water due to which I cannot comment in detail on the article. However, one thing is for sure that our country is playing hostage to the whims and wishes of a few powerful people. Pakistan has been blessed with all sorts of natural resources and the people of this great country are very talented and hardworking. Under favorable conditions elsewhere, Pakistanis always prove their mettle. Unfortunately, in their own country they become victims to nepotism and unnecessary politics.
Sometimes, when I switch on the television to learn about the current happenings in Pakistan, a kind of gloom sets in and I start feeling depressed. Everybody appears to be bickering about one issue or the other. The main issues facing the nation are seldom discussed. Every talk show is about political wrangling and corruption of this politician or that politician. What about the masses? Who will raise the issues facing the masses? I think we are equally to be blamed for this situation. We have given our country to these good-for-nothing political parties in a platter to do whatever they want to do with Pakistan. We all should be ashamed of ourselves. If we want things to be changed, we should first change ourselves.
