This is with reference to the article “Unfairly criticizing Modi govt” (May 7) by Rajeev Sharma. In an attempt to appease Modi and his cronies, the writer completely ignored the ground situation in India. Instead of adopting a balanced and objective approach, the writer chose to create a wrong perception among readers who are not well-versed with the dynamics of Indian politics.

Unfortunately, it is due to such journalists that the truth never reaches the masses. Such newsmen usually work for their selfish interest. They ignore the fact that the communal elements gaining strength under the current government are hell bent on destroying the social fabric of the Indian society. Secularism is the key to the success of India. The diversity in the Indian society is its strength. Almost every day, parliamentarians belonging to the ruling party spit venom against minorities. Those statements are on record but Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not take any action against such people.

Modi and his cronies have a dark past. Nobody could forget the 2002 Gujarat pogrom. Even our secular Hindu friends oppose these elements. Unfortunately, the anti-Congress propaganda of the BJP worked in its favor due to certain weaknesses of the Manmohan Singh government.

I have nothing against the writer. He is entitled to his opinion. But when it comes to writing a column for a prestigious newspaper, he should not ignore facts and figures. Journalists are supposed to work for the betterment of their societies. They are bound to expose all kinds of corruption and wrong ideas. — Qazi Tajuddin, Jeddah
