This is with reference to the report “Myanmar escorts boatload of 700 migrants to Rakhine state” (June 3). The Nobel laureate, Dalai Lama, has urged another Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to speak out on behalf of Myanmar’s persecuted Rohingya minority. Although Suu Kyi was vociferous about the military rule then and was kept under house arrest for a long period of time, now she appears to be more focused on elections than the ongoing genocide of Rohingya Muslims. Despite international outcry Myanmar’s freedom fighter is observing a frightening silence.
The Rohingyas have been living in western Myanmar for centuries but they are still considered illegal immigrants and persecuted not only by officials but also by the majority community.
Another outstanding personality from South Africa Archbishop Desmond Tutu has also expressed concern over her silence. She is no more a peace laureate but a laureate turned politician! Now the question is: Who will rescue the Rohingyas? — S.H. Moulana, Riyadh
