A disgusting world

This refers to the article, “Evoking Srebrenica.” (July 17)

The writer has rightly reminded the gruesome carnage that had taken place in the besieged town of Srebrenica where, as reported, 8,000 Bosnian Muslims men and boys were massacred. It was indeed shocking as the enclave where they had taken refuge and where they were mowed down was considered a “safe area under UN protection.”

For all the reactions that the UN, the US or any other country made at that time condemning the killing, the fact is that the incident reflected the collective impotency of the world, nay their selective action when it comes to dealing with any situation like that.

The urgency with which the US had led the world to attack Afghanistan and Iraq is often found missing when situation demands protection of Muslims. And the examples galore: Palestine, Myanmar and so on.

When a specter rises from the ashes of Srebrenica or Palestine or Myanmar, they call it ‘terrorism driven by faith.’

The civilized world has made the earth a disgusting place to live in. — Mumshad Akhtar, New Delhi
