‘Zaheer Ab-bas karo’ (stop it Zaheer Abbas) was the unison shout from the Indian players in the field when the ‘batting machine’ starts exploding said Sunil Gavaskar, while he was commentating.
This cricket legend, one of the finest batsmen Pakistan has ever produced is the current president of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
He was warmly, and rightly so, welcomed by Sri Lankan officials and a large number of cricket fans on his arrival to Colombo. He timed his visit with the third ODI Pakistan vs. Sri Lanka played in the city.
I still have vivid memory of his 274 against England in late sixties. It was only his second Test, which is still the fourth ever highest scored by a Pakistani batsman.
Imran Khan once said ‘If Zaheer and Miandad were to bat together, the former will overtake the latter easily.’
Zaheer is on his first official visit to a full member nation since he was elected president of the ICC.
With his unblemished record on and off the field he is the most ideally suited choice to hold the current position in the body that governs the gentlemanly game that is cricket. — S.H. Moulana, Riyadh
