This refers to the article, “Let Syrians decide their future,” (July 3) by Abdelelah Alkhatib, Amro Musa, Mohammad Al-Sabah & Turki Al Faisal — all top notch personalities.
This turns the piece into no less than an outcome of a brainstorming conference on Syria, and hence it was so important to read and understand the issue threadbare.
I read so many articles on Syria to find any solution to this festering crisis without any satisfactory answer.
But this article by the noted men of understanding and experience is refreshingly original in idea and an effort in right direction.
I endorse the view that it is best left to the people of Syria to decide their course of action and to shape their future. The efforts on the global as well as regional players should only be to facilitate avenues for them to have their voice heard and a venue away from the regime that has ravaged them.
Why I say this, and which is what the writers of the article have come up with, is that the groups that are supposed to fight on their behalf have their own respective agendas, many of whom may degenerate into a dispensation with terror tactics, in the event of Bashar Assad being eased out of Damascus. — Dr. Hashim Al-Mahdi, Jeddah
