Malaysian math contest

I would like to thank Arab News for covering the Malaysian Math Contest.
It was heartening to see the gleaming faces of the students who have won laurels for Saudi Arabia at the 18th UC MAS Abacus International Contest. I was immensely pleased to see the flag of Saudi Arabia flying high once again in Kuala Lumpur as it secured overall third position among 52 countries, thanks to the excellent performance put up by all of the participants. My 9-year-old daughter, who was one of the participants and a winner of 2nd runner up prize in her category stated that she had tears in her eyes hearing the name of Saudi Arabia time and again as they announced the names of the winners. It was indeed a memorable moment for her and all other participants who got the opportunity to compete with 5,000 odd students and experience the thrill of participating at an international educational event of such a huge scale.
I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah and the relevant agencies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that encourage conducting of extra-curricular courses which help the Saudi and non-Saudi students to learn different skills and arts besides the regular school curriculum. I hope and pray that the name of the Kingdom will keep shining at such international events and the world community will get to know the potential and the competitive spirit of the students from Saudi Arabia. — Safi H.
