On a cool, fine morning, 60 riders gathered in the Dirab Hills for the testing Riyadh Wheelers 28km Hilly Time Trial.
The full course was being used for the first time so no benchmark had been set; it was therefore an amazing feat that an average speed of over 41kph was recorded by the winner, Thierry Mathy.
This superb effort gave him victory by nearly 4 minutes, a truly remarkable achievement. In second place and beating riders more than half his age was Jiri Kuba, who continues to impress in this toughest of disciplines, where a mixture of power and climbing agility is required.
Talented all-rounder but one who readily admits to disliking time trials, was Norberto Daa who again stuck to the task on a standard road bike to come in third. Javier Villalobos from Southern Spain, confessed to liking the hills and put in a great performance, just missing out on a podium position despite being caught by Kuba in the early stages.
Ride of the day came from Andy MacLachlan, who’s had a meteoric climb up the results in recent weeks and should be an inspiration to all. Said MacLachlan, “my season’s ambition is to get under the hour for 25 miles and have upgraded to a new TT machine to help me do this.”
With a quality performance like this, it shouldn’t take long. Geron Guanlao and Antonio Rodriguez put in great rides, beating fancied riders Steve Jenkins and George Morete in the process. Cat B went to the consistent Maria Aruajo who just edged out Jana Jaruskova in the absence of champion Veronique Mathy. Carrefour Le Mall provided the post race refreshments.
