Mystery over Pak official’s death

This refers to the story “Family doubts suicide of Pak PM investigator.” Extraordinary anxiety in Pakistan’s powerful circles after the death of Kamran Faisal, an official of National Accountability Bureau (NAB), and pressure tactics to ensure that it is declared a “suicide” by investigators has deepened the mystery.
The officer was investigating a corruption case against the prime minister. His family and colleagues have refused to accept his death as a suicide, terming it a “premeditated murder.”
Irrespective of the reason of his death — suicide or murder — what is clear in this case is that civil servants in the country are not allowed to work honestly and independently.
The high and mighty do not fear the rule of law and have set their own sets of rules. Those in the bureaucracy who do not want to conform to their rules are either removed from their respective positions or physically eliminated. This is what has happened to this brave investigator.
With regard to Pakistan’s rental power plants (RPPs) case in which Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf is also one of the main accused, many officials investigating the case have been transferred so far. If things continue like this which investigative officer will dare to expose corrupt politicians and bureaucrats in the country. — Aziz Atif, Lahore
