Two killed as truck smashes into Haj Terminal

Two Iranian women were killed and six others injured at the Haj Terminal at Jeddah airport on Thursday after a ground service vehicle crashed through the glass wall of the building. The accident took place at 4:40 p.m. at Haj Terminal 13, according to the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA).
“A ground service vehicle hit the glass wall of the terminal with force and entered the passengers waiting area. The unfortunate accident resulted in the death of two Iranian ladies and injured six others who were waiting for their flight to Tehran,” GACA said in a statement.
The statement did not explain what happened to the driver or whether he was in his vehicle during the accident, but an airport employee told Arab News that the vehicle was providing water to an airplane with the engine running and in gear. “It looks as if the brakes did not hold, so it moved,” the employee said.
Arab News received a copy of a letter sent from the airport authority to Prince Mishal bin Majed, the city governor, explaining that the driver was detained and being questioned. A local newspaper identified the driver as an Asian man.
Shortly after the incident, video clips of the tragedy were uploaded on YouTube and the matter was discussed on social networking sites.
The clips on YouTube, which cannot be independently verified, show the smashed truck inside the passenger area. The pictures show shards of glass strewn around, with a trail of blood on the floor, a man lying on his back and another person pinned to the truck.
