Delhi shamed again

The “rape capital” Delhi has lived up to its “shame” once again. A five-year-old was raped and brutally assaulted by a man living near her house. Her condition is critical owing to horrific treatment meted out to her by the perpetrator.
The horrific crime, which would make even the barbarians feel ashamed of, has sent shock waves across the country. Public fury over the latest attack in the capital echoed the response to the gang rape of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student on a bus on Dec. 16, 2012. The young girl later succumbed to her injuries in a Singapore hospital.
And what is really bizarre that the attitude of the police that had to face a lot of flak for their shoddy handling of Dec. 16 gang rape case has not changed. It seems that they have not learned any lessons. In the latest case, the police officer investigating the case told the victim’s family that “thank God that your child is alive” and offered 2,000 rupees not to file a case? Where we are headed? How long will citizens of the largest democracy endure the insensitivity of the rulers and the law keepers? How long will it take them to realize that a woman is also a human being?
These rape cases demonstrate the attitude of Indian men toward girls and women. Why do we forget that these girls and women are our daughters, our mothers, our wives and our sisters? For them their fight for survival starts from the womb as our society does not want a girl child.
How long and how many rapes more before those who are responsible for the safety of women will wake up? — A.S. Ansar, Shuqaiq, Alkhobar
