Welfare of Muslims

This refers to the report “Indian legislator assures all help to NRIs” (April 23) by Ghazanfar Ali Khan. As a matter of fact, Indian legislator Abu Asim Azmi is not a respected figure among Muslims in India, especially in Mumbai city. He has not done anything special for the welfare of Muslims in Mumbai. His business empire is flourishing in Colaba, Mumbai, but he is neglecting the poor Muslims in his area.
He and his party contested last Assembly elections from Bhiwandi — the suburb of Mumbai city — and won few seats from the area region. But even after winning a few seats, he has not done anything to uplift the standard of living of Bhiwandi people.
He delivers fiery speeches and promises a lot to Muslim masses, but delivers nothing.
He has enormous wealth and influence and he is capable of doing many welfare activities for the Muslim community in Mumbai. He has set up any educational institution where poor and needy Muslims get education at affordable cost. Scores of poor Muslims have no roof to live under, but there is no free housing society or orphanage center he has built. There is no reason that he should be supported in his efforts to promote himself as a leader of Mumbai Muslims.
It is a big travesty that Muslims in India do not have sincere and upright leaders, that is why Muslims people are being exploited and they face hardships for no fault of them. It is high time that Muslim leaders of India did something sincerely for the welfare of Muslims in India, they would earn real respect from the masses and Allah willing they will succeed in Hereafter also. — Anees Lokhande, Alkhobar
