Ex-PBA pro Boyet Bautista exploded for 39 big points as Samco outclassed defending champion Pepsi Cola 87-86 for its first victory in the 2013 Industrial Sports Association (ISA)-Perfetto Basketball Tournament at the Industrial City Dawa Office (ICDO) court in Industrial City Phase I on the outskirts of Jeddah.
After winning two straight games, Pepsi Cola bowed to Samco which got a big lift from former Purefoods point guard PBA Boyet Bautista who played tremendous basketball and was named Best Player of the game.
In the first half of action, Pepsi Cola played beautiful music on the hard court as Gino Cilot and Christian Guimpatan led the team and combined for 20 points in giving Pepsi a 39-36 lead to end the period.
But in the third canto, Bautista became unstoppable shooting three straight 3-pointers and Joseph Ubalde dominated underneath to control the rebounds as Samco snatched the lead before going to the final period, 63-56.
Gino and Guimpatan scored eight unanswered points to put Pepsi back in the lead with five minutes to play. But then when push came to shove Bautista took over and threw down cold blooded three-point shot while Ubalde collected one crucial rebound and a putback with 9 seconds remaining. Pepsi had a chance to win but could not finish the play and lost the game. Sadafco bounced back from its previous defeat to score a 66-41 victory over Sofab.
Gabaza and Jalbuena combined for 19 points in the first quarter alone to power Sadafco to an early 25-8 lead. From there it was an smooth sailing for Sadafco.
Ulker trailed in the first three quarters but drew a combined 55 points from Roxas and Leo Tablante to escape with a 67-65 win over powerhouse Hidada.
The final period was a see-saw battle but the great shooting of Roxas and the power play of Tablante made the difference in the last three minutes of the game as Ulker stopped the two-game winning streak of Hidada.
