A Pakistani prisoner was badly beaten up in an Indian jail yesterday in apparent retaliation for a fatal attack on Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner in Pakistan whose death has led to widespread anger and strained already fraught ties between the neighbors.
Sanaullah Haq, who slipped into a coma after receiving severe head injuries, was shifted to a premier health care center in Chandigarh, Punjab.
A convict, Vinod Kumar, an ex-army man, attacked Haq with a garden hoe inside the jail.
The state government suspended the jail superintendent and ordered a high-level inquiry into the case.
Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said the incident was "condemnable" and called on India to punish the attacker.
India's Foreign Ministry said it regretted the attack and promised to give consular access to Haq once his condition stabilized.
Meanwhile, Sarabjit was cremated with full state honors in his home village in Punjab yesterday, but the heart, kidneys and stomach were missing from his body. Doctors who conducted the autopsy on the body said the absence of the vital organs made the postmortem examination to determine the cause of Sarabjit's death inconclusive.
"We were not anticipating that Pakistan would send the body without these vital organs," head of the forensic department, Dr. Gurmanjit Singh, told The Indian Express.
Several Indian states beefed up security in their jails in an aim to protect Pakistani prisoners. Many states already keep Pakistani prisoners segregated from their Indian counterparts.
Sarabjit's home state of Punjab declared a three-day state of mourning.
