CINCINNATI: After Devin Mesoraco’s pinch-hit homer tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Choo Shin-soo delivered his second homer of the night as host Cincinnati stunned Atlanta 5-4 Tuesday.
Atlanta closer Craig Kimbrel (0-1) was one strike away from ending the game, but Mesoraco tied it up at four. Four pitches later, Choo launched another fastball.
Jonathan Broxton (1-1) pitched a scoreless ninth for the victory as Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker won his 1,600th career game.
Cubs 2 Cardinals 1: Nate Schierholtz hit a two-run homer and Travis Wood outdueled Lance Lynn to lead host Chicago past rivals St. Louis in the opener of a two-game set.
Wood (3-2) surrendered a solo homer to Allen Craig for his only allowed run over 6 2/3 innings. Schierholtz’s blast came in the fourth.
Mets 1, White Sox 0 (10 innings)
Mike Baxter’s pinch-hit single brought home the winning run in the 10th inning and New York pitchers retired 30 of 31 batters to beat visiting Chicago.
Mets starter Matt Harvey retired the first 20 batters and pitched nine innings in the majors for the first time, allowing one hit, and Bobby Parnell (3-0) worked a perfect 10th.
Alex Rios’ infield single in the seventh was the only hit for Chicago and Harvey struck out a career-high 12.
Pirates 4 Mariners 1: Garrett Jones homered and Andrew McCutchen had an RBI double among his four hits as host Pittsburgh won the opener of the two-game interleague series.
The Pirates scored twice in the first on RBI doubles from Travis Snider and McCutchen. Jeanmar Gomez (2-0) allowed two hits over five shutout innings after scheduled starter James McDonald was scratched with right shoulder discomfort.
Jason Grilli recording his major-league leading 13th save in the first meeting between the teams since 2004.
