PRISTINA, Kosovo: Thousands of ethnic Albanians protested the arrest of six former senior rebel commanders on suspicion of war crimes committed during the 1998-99 Kosovo war.
The suspects, including Kosovo’s ambassador to Albania, a sitting mayor of a town, and prime minister’s bodyguard are suspected of running a detention center where civilian captives were beaten and at least one believed killed.
The case is being handled by the EU’s rule of law mission in Kosovo, which deals with war crimes and organized crime cases since Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008.
The protesters carried portraits of the suspects in the capital Pristina on Monday and chanted slogans against the EU’s law mission.
The six are under house arrest for 30 days pending an ongoing investigation.
