PATNA: Police say suspected Maoist rebels have ambushed a police jeep, killing at least six officers in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand.
Director General of Police Rajiv Kumar says around 50 armed rebels surrounded the jeAep yesterday and fired at the policemen, killing six of them instantly.
Four other policemen were wounded in the attack, which took place in a densely forested area of Dumka district.
The rebels claim inspiration from Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong.
They’re demanding land and jobs for impoverished tribal communities that they say are ignored by the government. The rebels are active in at least 20 of India’s 28 states.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described the Maoist insurgency as India’s biggest internal security threat.
