The Jeddah Basketball League opened its 2013 2nd Conference Non-Rated Basketball Tournament last Friday at Bin Mahfouz court at Andalus District here.
Participating teams paraded in their resplendent uniforms during the opening ceremony which JBL President Mohammed Rasheed Suyat and JBL Commissioner Joe Dela Cerna presided. Baba Ahmad Peradilla and Ali Lumanog of Jeddah Dawa Center provided the opening prayers and inspirational Islamic Dawa.
The awards for the Best Team in Uniform went to Almabani and MTTS while claiming the Best Mascot accolades were Leylati, Almabani and Duduts Internet Cafe. Best Muse awards went to MTTS and Tony’s Basketball Team.
In the first game of tournament opening day, Leylati of Arif Al Ayash and Gerome beat ALJ Toyota 83-73. Leylati offense was unstoppable in the final quarter.
Toyota ALJ Quality Service tried hard to marshal its defense but Leylati was inspired due to the presence of its ladies staff. Mandawa scored 26 points for Leylati and was adjudged as the Orient Watch best player of the game while LLamado top-scored with 26 points for Toyota ALJ Quality Service.
The tournament major sponsor is Orient Watch-Al Hussaini and Al Yahya Investment Group (Othman Al Hussaini). Giordano Fashions (Ahmedullah), ABS-CBN — The Filipino Channel, Flash Cargo (Arnold Dela Cruz), Saudi Signs (Sam Adora), Al Haddaf Sportswear (Mohamed Bayoumi) and Arab News are co-sponsors.
Defending champion Almabani of Vic Carreon defeated AVK Wild Boys 69-38. Almabani showed supremacy in offense in the whole game. AVK missed the services of their big men but played gallantly despite being undermanned. Caguioa led Almabani with 16 points and was adjudged as the Giordano best player of the game while Nabong had 9 points for AVK Wild Boys.
Caltex beat Tony’s Basketball Team 70-59. Caltex fought hard in the fourth quarter as Tony’s repeatedly came back to the game but then lost steam in the dying seconds. Reloj top-scored with 29 points for Caltex and was adjudged as the Saudi Sign best player of the game while Contreras and Micky Leyva scored 20 and 16 points respectably for Tony’s Basketball team.
