The ongoing debate on the identity of people involved in the Mumbai terror attack is completely absurd. I do not understand the need for living in a self-denial mode and obtusely refusing to accept the reality and facts. Mumbai attack is known to be the most well documented terror attack and the whole siege was telecast live all over the world. There was not a single moment where the media was not present. The arguments put forth by some writers quoting excerpts from a report that the attacks were orchestrated by the Indian government to strengthen the counterterrorism laws are totally childish and outlandish. I believe only those who sympathize with terrorists and terror organizations would object to having tougher laws to deal with terrorism. All civilized societies would certainly welcome strong counterterrorism laws.
Even President Asif Ali Zardari had indicated that the terrorists might be non-state actors from Pakistan and not to forget that the police in Pakistan had formally charged seven persons accused of having a role in the attack, though due to political pressures, the court fell short of convicting them.
I recall watching a TV show where the anchor and the guest were suggesting that Ajmal Qasab was indeed an Indian from the Punjab province as he didn’t seem like a Pakistani from his physique. I don’t know to whom they were trying to teach geography and making them understand that the distance between the two provinces of the same name in both countries is long enough to have significant change in physical attributes of persons. They carried on to state that the other person who was caught alive was later killed and his body was mutilated to hide his identity. What was the reason then Qasab was spared and not killed to close the whole chapter?
Let us not get swayed away by such childish and laughable theories and create unnecessary furor. — Safi H. Jannaty, Dammam
