There are no Saudi prisoners remaining in jail after completing their sentence, according to the Saudi Human Rights Commission (SHRC).
The commission stated that prisoners who complete their sentences are released immediately.
“As far as Saudi nationals are concerned, they are free when they have served their time, whereas foreign nationals are asked to complete procedures for deportation following the expiry of their sentences,” said Ebrahim Asri, acting head of the SHRC office in the Eastern Province.
“The sponsors of foreign nationals are also asked to cooperate in the completion of paperwork ahead of their departure from the Kingdom,” he added.
Asri said the commission made 140 visits and field tours that included public prison and detention centers. The visits were made since establishing an office in the Eastern Province. No prisoners were found languishing in jails after their sentences were completed.
He said, "Our team visited jails, detention and rehabilitation centers for men and women in the Eastern province to report our observations to authorities. There were positive responses.”
He said that the inspections were based on a decision by the Cabinet to allow the commission to make unannounced visits and to file reports to authorities.
Asri said the prison home and correction centers cooperated with the commission.
