OTTAWA, Province of Ontario: Unemployment in Canada ticked up to 7.2 percent in July as joblessness rose among youths, the government’s Statistics Canada bureau reported.
Employment fell by 39,000 last month, leading to the 0.1 percentage point fall in the jobless rate.
Unemployment rose in Quebec, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, while joblessness fell in Alberta, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan.
Job losses mainly came in the public sector, while gains were registered in business, building and other support services.
Statistics Canada said the job losses were concentrated among youths aged 15 to 24, “as a result of less hiring this July compared with previous Julys.”
Despite the July fall in new jobs, for the past six months the country netted average monthly gains of 11,000 new jobs.
The unemployment rate in July 2012 was 7.3 percent.
