The US talk show host and billionaire Oprah Winfrey has said that a shop assistant refused to serve her in upmarket Zurich handbag shop. Winfrey was apparently told one of the bags was “too expensive” for her.
The TV star has said that she left the shop without contesting the shop assistant’s behavior but contributed her experience to a debate about the continued existence of racism on a US television show.
She told viewers, ‘I had my little Donna Karan skirt and my little sandals. But obviously “The Oprah Winfrey Show” is not shown in Switzerland. Isn’t it strange that this has happened at a time when Washington is preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s inspirational speech; “I have a dream,” he made in front of 200,000 people on Aug. 28, 1963? It is also highly significant that these celebrations are taking place in the American capital under a black president, who was not only the first black president but also re-elected with a landslide majority, beating white contestants on both occasions.
Let us recall here, one of highly treasured quotes of Dr. Martin Luther King, he said; “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” It is very unfortunate that the world is deprived of such great leaders at a time they are very much needed! — S.H. Moulana, Riyadh
