AbdulJabbar Yamani announced on Tuesday that King Fahd Medical City is planning on building a national obesity treatment center in Riyadh.
Yamani said the center would specialize in the treatment of extreme obesity cases in Saudi Arabia.
The center will also serve as an Obesity Reference Center.
Yamani’s announcement came after the KFMC admitted 20-year-old Khalid Mohsen Shaeri on Monday, who suffers from an extreme case of obesity.
At 610 kilograms, Khalid Mohsen Shaeri had to be lifted from the second floor of an apartment building in Jazan with the use of a forklift on Monday and then airlifted onboard a special plane accompanied by a medical team to the King Fahd Medical City (KFMC) for treatment.
“When he was just five months old, Shaeri began experiencing seizures and loss of consciousness, which continued with him until the age of two, where his body’s weight began growing rapidly, which complicated his movement and activities,” said Dr. Ayed Al-Qahtani, director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at King Fahad Medical city.
He added, “Khaled has ten siblings. His eldest brother is 23-years-old and also suffers from obesity, weighing in at 150 kilos. His 18-year-old sister also suffers from obesity and weighs 100 kilos.”
Health Minister Abdullah Al-Rabeeah delivered Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah's well wishes to Khalid Shaeri during his visit to the hospital.
