A Saudi man posted a tweet, which was intended as a laugh. The joke was on him when he was later forced to marry his friend’s sister. The young man posted a tweet with a hashtag entitled ‘Ask your friend for his sister’s hand in marriage.’ His friend, who happened to have a sister, published reports of his phone calls with the man, and the whole situation spiraled out of control.
The Saudi tweep didn’t think his friend would take him seriously, when he sent a message via WhatsApp asking his friend for his sister’s hand in marriage. The brother however showed the message to his father, who did take the matter seriously.
When the tweep learned that his joke was turning into reality he told them that he would be honored to marry their daughter, but he was unemployed at the moment. The girl’s brother then cornered him and vowed to secure him a job. He also published the conversation to make others learn a lesson from this deed.
Under the hashtag ‘Ask your friend for his sister’s hand in marriage,’ Twitter users published images of conversations with their friends, to find out their friends’ reaction when they would see the post for the first time.
Some Twitter users thought the joke was hilarious. Others, like Malik Al-Gaide, disagreed. He said: “Our Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘Three matters are to be taken seriously marriage, divorce and taking a wife back,’ so servant of Allah, fear Allah.”
