STOCKHOLM: Sweden’s Princess Madeleine, the youngest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf, and her businessman husband Chris O’Neill are expecting their first child in March, the palace announced on Tuesday.
“Princess Madeleine and Mr. Christopher O’Neill are delighted to announce that the princess is expecting their first child,” the palace said in a statement.
“The birth is expected to take place in beginning of March of 2014,” it added.
Madeleine, 31, also posted an announcement on Facebook.
“Chris and I are thrilled to let you know that we are expecting a baby for early March next year. We feel so blessed and can’t wait to become parents!” she wrote, prompting more than 1,000 comments in the first hour.
The photogenic princess married O’Neill, a 38-year-old British-US businessman based in New York, in a lavish Stockholm ceremony in June attended by 500 guests, including a number of European royals.
The couple currently live in New York, where Madeleine works with the World Childhood Foundation, a charity set up in 1999 by her mother Queen Silvia.
She is expected to continue her duties throughout the autumn, the palace said.
The royal baby will be the second grandchild for the king and queen: Madeleine’s older sister, Crown Princess Victoria, gave birth to Princess Estelle in February 2012.
