The Saudi Food and Drug Authority reassured consumers on Friday that all baby dairy products on the market are safe for consumption and free of contamination. There was no need for the public to fear buying dairy products for their children.
“The Saudi Food and Drug Authority has sent quantities of Similac Gain Plus dairy product suspected of contamination to a laboratory in Germany. The final results will be available within 48 hours,” said Idris Al-Idris of the SFDA.
Al-Idris said test results were late due to a delay in having the product accepted for testing by the German laboratory, which follows strict procedures.
This comes after 420,000 contaminated Similac Gain Plus products were taken off shelves in Saudi Arabia. The SFDA says all the products were from the last shipment imported from New Zealand.
Al-Idris said the recall took place as a precautionary measure so that tests could be conducted by a laboratory. He said the ministry of commerce in New Zealand and the manufacturing company had warned of the potential contamination of the products.
