More than 700 employees working at a local company gathered at Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh on Thursday to protest low wages, delayed payment and the employer's failure to renew official work permits.
Protesters included employees from the same company working on the Al-Shemaysi project located between Jeddah and Makkah. This is the third such incident. A large number of security personnel were present at the site.
The workers’ demanded that they be paid their salaries at the end of the month without delay, as well as increasing their monthly wages. The workers were also protesting against the failure to renew their residency permits, which had expired.
Both Saudi and non-Saudi employees were involved in the protests, a source said, adding that there were no casualties during the protest.
Fahd Al-Saleh, a spokesman at the Retirement General Association, declined to comment on the impact of the protests on project deadlines.
Col. Fawaz Al-Maiman, Riyadh police spokesman, said traffic patrols, not his department, are responsible for dealing with crowds.
