War not the solution for peace in ME, says Akram

War not the solution for peace in ME, says Akram

Following are excerpts from the interview:

How do you see the economic situation in the Gulf countries and Arab region?
I think the economy is very strong in some Gulf countries. I see tremendous opportunity due in large part to their oil reserves. This is a huge advantage over poorer economies, which are slowing down.

To what extent has the Arab Spring affected Gulf country economies and the Arab region?
Generating employment for young people would certainly be helpful in these countries. Of course, there are political issues that need to be addressed. Gulf countries, which are a stronghold of financial stability, would do well to help tackle the problem of employment, which is a regional issue.

As adviser to UN, how do you see the future of Egypt and Syria?
I think many mistakes have been made in Egypt that have led to the political polarization of society. It will require concerted political efforts, as well as other elements in Egypt, to reach a consensus.I think the fact that there are many promises for investment in Egypt is a good sign toward establishing stability.

Do you think an intervention in Syria will make any difference to regional stability?
I wish and hope that there will be no military strike against Syria, as war is not the solution for peace in the Arab region. Chemical weapons should be surrendered and destroyed to pave the way for a political process to be initiated to bring about peace in Syria.

What do you have to say about Pakistan’s current situation and economic condition?
Pakistan has faced many challenges, both in terms of the economy and in terms of securiwty and the environment. On the economic front, I believe policies should be adopted by the new government with emphasis on the need for accelerated investment and growth of the economy, job creation, real estate development and the promotion of education, besides dealing with social issues.
All these issues have pushed the economy into a state of stagnation. Issues are interconnected, so there should be a realistic and strategic approach to deal with them, both by specialists and the public.
