Saudi Arabia on Thursday denied press reports that it had reached an agreement to recruit maids from Turkey.
Ahmed Al-Fehaid, deputy labor minister for international affairs, said: “We have not conducted any negotiations with Turkey in this respect.”
He said the Kingdom was going ahead with its plan to recruit maids from India. “We have reached an agreement on various articles for the recruitment of Indian maids,” Al-Fehaid said, adding that it would be finalized during Labor Minister Adel Fakeih’s upcoming visit to New Delhi.
Saad Al-Baddah, head of the National Committee for Recruitment, had earlier denied plans to recruit Turkish maids as rumors. “This report is not correct according to my knowledge,” he said.
Turkish Consul General Fikret Ozer said Turkish regulations do not allow the export of house servants from the country. There are about 100,000 Turkish workers in Saudi Arabia. Of them, 70,000 work in the Tabuk region as mechanics, engineers, restaurant staff, tailors and barbers.
