The article “No country for young people” by Nadeem Mumtaz Qureshi (Dec. 12) was very thought provoking. The writer has painted the overall picture of Pakistan in a very light manner but whatever views he has expressed in his article are logical. Although, he himself has admitted that the mindset cannot be easily changed. Blue-collar jobs are considered menial and this is the reason behind the ever-increasing unemployment figures in Pakistan.
The main reason for this mess is our leaders’ indifference toward the education sector. Since the creation of the country, none of our leaders have seriously considered improving the education system. A careful study of our checkered political history would reveal that our politicians have spent most of their energies in power struggles. In the course, they forgot one thing: The hunger for power can never be satiated. In Pakistan, political exigencies shape our policies.
The ideas floated by the writer may not be novel, but needs attention. Such measures need strong political will and long-term planning. However, we should not expect anything from leaders suffering from political myopia. — Nihal Hashmi, Dammam
