MUMBAI: Yash Raj Films’ action thriller “Dhoom 3” opened with a roaring $9.54 million worldwide total on its opening day.
The motorbike-heavy picture clocked up $6.1 million in India and a further $3.44 million in the rest of the world, according to company sources.
That total included $1.28 million from the Gulf and Middle East, which YRF claims is a record, and $1.1 from North America, which also would be a record for a Bollywood film. The film plays on 236 screens in North America and with close to $4,500 per screen average on Fri Dec. 20 is comfortably the best performing film in the top ten.
The two day earnings of the Yash Raj production film is more than the three days’ figure of Shah Rukh Khan’s “Chennai Express.”
In Pakistan also, the film has created record by earning $210,000 on first day, trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.
Even in Pakistan circuits, the advance booking was massive. “It is running back to back in Lahore and there is only Dhoom 3. It is dominating all multiplex timings. There are no tickets before Monday,” producer Sarah Tarin told The Times of India.
In UAE-GCC market, the film had the biggest opening ever, collection $1,279,000, while in US-Canada market “Dhoom 3” raked in $1 million.
“Chennai Express” had shattered records at both domestic and overseas box offices, but with “Dhoom 3” Aamir has taken the top spot again.
