Defending Champion Al Taj A retained the championship crown in the 1st Inter-School Bonafide Parents basketball tournament 2014 hosted by Sheraton Riyadh Hotel & Towers outsmarting Elite Team A at 2-1 in the best-of-three finals.
In the third game of the Group A final series, Al Taj boys outsmarted rivals 80-77 at the Sheraton rubberized court.
The trophies of the event were sponsored by friends of FCBR President Mohd. “Ed” Tamayo.
Elite’s Roel Langit and Ryan Biugos of Al Taj engaged each other in a 3-point shootout to signal an exciting game.
Al Taj controlled the first & second quarters (19-14 and 35-29). A cling-hanger third quarter ended tied with Elite boys anchored by Jerome Emping’s 8 points and 6 apiece by Farid Badawi and Danny Bugayong’s 6 putting their best effort to catch Al Taj at 55-55.
At the start of the fourth quarter, it took 1.27 minutes before the first basket was recorded courtesy of Dennis Lejano followed by Glen Velayo and Ryan Biugos. In the last 1.12 minutes the Al Taj twin Towers of Drew Vallejo and Rodney Esguerra used their height to control the rebounew and the Elite’s Langit, Jeff Salac and Bogie Dibaratum fouled out in succession and Al Taj outscored Elite A to close out the series 2-1.
The awarding ceremony followed the game with the recipients as follows: Topher Dimaculangan (SPIS) highest single scorer, Roel Langit highest in steal, Michael Atraje – highest in assists both from Elite team A, Andrew Vallejo – highest in rebound, Rodney Esguerra – highest in block-shots and Ryan Biugos – highest in 3-pointer.
The mythical five are: Topher Dimaculangan (SPIS) and Danny Bugayong (Elite team A) Best Guards, Michael Atraje (Elite) and Rey Saraosos (Fugen) Best Forwards and Andrew Vallejo Best Center. Dennis Lejano (Al Taj) was Most Disciplined Player. The season MVP was Michael Atraje (Elite team A) and Finals MVP Rodney Esguerra (Al Taj).
The 3rd runner-up was Future Generation; 2nd runner-up Second Philippine International School (SPIS); Elite International first runner-up and Al Taj team A the Champion. The Most Disciplined Team was Future Generation. Jonathan Tan was Best Coach and Oliven Balmeo Best Manager.
The committee would like to thank all supporters especially Tamayo and his friends for providing the trophies, Arab News, FCBR group of referees, the table officials headed by Jess Lumanog as chairman of the Technical Committee, Allan Delos Reyes, the barker, Laurence V. Fellizar, Kris Paulo Banal, Eli Fallorin, Richard Go, Ton Ton Salvador, Edgar Simbol, Ziyao Soro, Anthony Concepcion, Rene delos Reyes, and Mr. July the toastmaster.
