This is in response to the article “Modi set to get taste of his own medicine” (March 29) by Nilofar Suhrawardy. The writer has analyzed the political drama being played by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and within the party emphatically. The caste card, indeed, plays a pivotal role in the Indian society and politics.
In the history of India, a person belonging to a backward class or lower caste has never become a prime minister.
Earlier, when the BJP had to choose between two stalwarts L.K. Advani and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, preference was given to Vajpayee, as the former was not a Brahmin and belonged to a Sindhi family.
Keeping in mind the checkered political history of India, one must endorse the writer’s views. It is true that chances of Modi to become the next prime minister of India are slim. — Anees Lokhande, Alkhobar
